ONTARIO REPEALS THE INDUSTRIAL EXCEPTION

Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) announced in an e-Newsletter on January 28th that the Ontario government approved the change to the Professional Engineers Act that will remove the profession's industrial exception to licence. Effective March 1, 2013, those responsible for professional engineering work in relation to their employer's production machinery or equipment must be licensed by PEO or have the work in question done or overseen by a PEO licence holder who takes responsibility for it. However, employers can file a transition plan with PEO by March 1 to have up to one year to meet the requirement and, if applicable, to receive an application fee waiver. SNP has helped raise awareness of the pending repeal (see "News Item" of July 1st, 2012) and has now volunteered to be a PEO ambassador to advise organizations on how to assess any potential impact from this change. If this provincial proclamation may affect your operations, you may contact either PEO or SNP for further information.
