INDUSTRIAL EXCEPTION REPEAL CANCELLED

The Ontario government, on June 12th, announced a decision to not proceed as scheduled with the repeal of section 12(3) (a) of the Professional Engineers Act, also known as the industrial exception to licence. In effect, the government cancelled its September 1, 2013 effective date for the repeal and did not set a new effective date. It is known that industry and trade associations opposed the repeal citing a number of concerns with the proposed legislation. PEO had been working for over three years to prepare Ontario industry for the repeal and was understandably disappointed with the decision but will continue to work with the government, share engineers’ concerns, and continue to monitor workplace accidents as they are reported. SNP had volunteered to be a PEO ambassador to advise organizations on how to assess any potential impact from the pending change.
